Hayato Hayasugi (速杉 ハヤト) is the main character of Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion THE ANIMATION and a recurring character of Shinkalion overall. He first appears in Episode 01 of Season 1 and Episode 30 of Season 2. He is voiced by Ayane Sakura.

Personal[]

Appearance[]

Hayato's attire consists of a white t-shirt with a dark-blue vertical stripe from the large collar down and dark-blue sleeves, a shade of green short pants, and green sneakers with a white tongue and pink outer soles.

When driving the Shinkalion E5 Hayabusa, Hayato wears a full green bodysuit with white sections and pink stripes, and a set of headphones with glowing green lines.

Personality[]

Hayato is an avid train enthusiast who dreams to become a Shinkansen driver (like his father used to be before joining the Shinkalion Develop Team), and having inherited his father's fascination for trains at a young age, he quickly grew well-versed in even some of the more obscure facts about railways. If possible, he will rant about it and compare any situation to a railway fact if possible, often to the annoyance and confusion of his friends and family. However, despite this, he doesn't vocally disapprove of or disagree with someone else's dreams. Instead, he accepts them and tries to understand them as best as he can. He is also very responsible when necessary and has a strong moral code, often doing his best to settle differences between friends calmly. These qualities made him invaluable to the SUEI in putting an end to the Kitoralsus conflict, and his uncanny ability to forge bonds between the Kitoralsus agents and other drivers has made him well respected by his friends.

Hayato prides himself on being a man of his word; if possible, he will keep a promise to the best of his abilities and try his hardest living up to the expectations of others. He is also confident in the abilities of his teammates and successors, doing his best to bring out the best of anyone he knows need a helping hand. Additionally, Hayato is very willing to forgive if he can see the good in anybody, but will aggressively mow down anyone who openly dismisses the dreams and goals of others. These traits would eventually rub off onto many of his colleagues, who have ended up sharing a similar level of morality after becoming acquainted with him.

Although he struggled with physical combat skills towards the start of the series, Hayato showed that he was a quick and adaptive learner when he's really dedicated; all it took was two days of training from Ryūji and Tatsumi for him to be much more proficient at combat using the E5. On the other hand, Hayato has two major weaknesses: his own fear of heights as well as lacking in a sense of direction, which could occasionally put himself in a disadvantage during battles. He eventually got over these in time to defeat the enemy. Hayato is also very used to the fact that other people never get his metaphors without explanation, and as such was surprised when Shin was able to understand his Abt-System comparison.

While Hayato in his teenage years retains his enthusiasm for railways and continues to admire them in his usual fashion when allowed, he is far more restrained than he was as a Shinkalion Driver, being much more mellow and mature. He still retains his compassionate and understanding nature, however, and was more than willing to leave the SUEI's future in the hands of the next generation.

In the second season, the Hayasugis have moved to York, England so that both Hayato and Haruka can get closer to accomplishing their dreams. Hayato, however, is still kept up to date on the SUEI's current operations, and has even returned to Japan for a New Year's gathering.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Akita or Tsuranaki, Hayato shares his given name and surname with his 2015 manga counterpart, though the anime iteration is drastically different in design and characterization.
