Abuto Usui (碓氷 アブト) is the co-protagonist in Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion Z. He first appears in Episode 01. He is voiced by Akari Kitō.
Personal[]
Abuto is a genius engineer who helps the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute with refitting the Shinkalions and building the Zailiners at a young age. However, he doesn't regard himself as a genius, as the blueprints of his "creations" actually come from his father, who has been sending these blueprints, as well as some hints to where the Z Codes are, directly into his head though some unknown method. These hints often take the form of dreams, in which a mysterious Dark Shinkansen also appears.
At the end of Episode 13, he boarded the Dark Shinkansen at Sekigahara Station in order to get clues about his father. When he returned at the next episode, however, he had already become the driver of the Dark Shinkalion and turned against the Ultra Evolution Institute.

Abuto is quiet and stoic, a stark contrast to the energetic and upbeat Shin. Highly intelligent and athletic, Abuto is known to toy with Shin when he doesn't feel like answering questions on the spot. He does care for his family, though, and refused to head to Ōmiya out of fear his mother would break down.
While under the command of Kannagi, Abuto became much more aggressive and conflicted, especially after Setsura entered the fray. Valtom's interference eventually lead him to become filled with nothing but rage and sadness, allowing the Dark Shinkalion to access Devil Mode. He returned to his normal self after Shin defeated him on Yugospia, which in the process disabled Devil Mode and restored Dark Shinkalion to its normal form.
Abuto's main motivation for driving the Dark Shinkalion was twofold; the first reason was due to family; he felt that driving it would lead him to his father, who he would slightly obsess over for quite some time. The second was to to actually be able to drive a Shinkalion; his compatible rating was far too low to let him drive any of the Earth-built Shinkalions, which would be a constant source of frustration for him. Ultimately, the Dark Shinkalion evolved after being freed from Teoti control, and Abuto is now able to drive it without any negative consequences.
Much like his father, Abuto is heavily fond of railway engineering and technology, particularly the conventional lines. When confronted with a railway-related subject of interest, he acts very similar to the driver of the original E5, Hayato Hayasugi, in that he will act very excited and rant about it. He also had a habit of lying to Shin, which was dropped as the bond between the two grew.

Etymology[]
- Abuto's surname Usui comes from the Usui Line, a currently closed section of the Shin'etsu Main Line between Karuizawa and Yokokawa Station.
- As Abuto stated himself in Episode 08, he is named by his father after the Abt System, a rack railway system invented by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt and was utilized in the Usui Line and the Oigawa Railway in Japan. While the name of the system is typically pronounced as "Aputo" in modern Japanese, the name "Abuto" was derived from an old pronunciation of the name when the system was first introduced in Japan.
